It was Christmas time in London. There was a man named Ebenezer Scrooge. He was a hard worker man, but at the same time he was a miserable, greedy, cruel, and stingy person, who didn`t know what generosity meant.

A day before Christmas, Scrooge was walking to his office where his clerk, Bob Crachit, was working.

We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy New Year.
Glad tidings we bring
To you and your kin;
Glad tidings for Christmas
And a happy New Year!
We want some milk and cookies
We want some milk and cookies
We want some milk and cookies
Please bring it right here!
Glad tidings we bring
To you and your kin;
Glad tidings for Christmas
And a happy New Year!

Rubbish, rubbish, rubbish

What's with all this singing? Who authorized this?

Do you dislike it ?

Скрудж: Of course I do! (Кричит в окно) : Get out of here, filthy beggars!

Merry christmas uncle, God save you!

Bah! Humbag!

Christmas a humbag, uncle? You don't mean that, I'm sure.

I do! Merry Christmas! What right have you to be merry, what reason have you to be merry, you are poor enough.

Come on, what right have you to be dismal, what right have you to be morose, you are rich enough.

Скрудж:_ Bah, humbag! What else can I be when I live in such a world of fools like this. What is Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money, a time for finding yourself a year older and not an hour richer.

Uncle!

Nephew! Keep Christmas on your way and let me keep it in mine!

Don't be angry, uncle. Come! Dine with us tomorrow.

I would come if... Why did you get married?

Because I fell in love

Because you fell in love! Good afternoon!

I want nothing from you; I ask nothing of you; why cannot we be friends?

Good afternoon!

I am sorry, with all my heart. So A Merry Christmas, uncle!'

Good afternoon!

And A Happy New Year!

Скрудж:_ Good afternoon!

Merry Christmas kind man!

We are collecting money for the poor. Thousands of people are in need of simplest things, even food and clothes.

Poor people’s place is in prison and work houses. I wont give anything, go away!

You'll want all day tomorrow, I suppose?

If quite convenient, sir.

It's not convenient, and it's not fair. You don't think I'll pay for no work. Be here all the earlier next morning.

I promise, I would!

Scrooge got home he climbed the steps to his bedroom, sat in a chair beside the fire and started to eat his supper. Suddenly he heard old bells ringing, and a strange and loud noise coming from the outside.

Who`s making that noise! I must have fallen asleep!.

But the strange noise continued, until he saw a ghost coming through the bedroom door.

I think I am dreaming!.

No, this is not a dream!.

I know you!. You are Marley. What do you want from me?.

Why do you trouble me?

I want a lot from you!. Do you see these chains?. I am chained to my sins.

What sins?. You were a hardworker and a good businessman.

Дух:_I had been very selfish when I was alive, I had been only interested in money and had not cared about people outside my office. Now, I have no rest and no peace. I wear the chain I made in life link by link. Do you know the weigh and length of the chain you wear yourself? I’m here to tell you that you have yet a chance not to go my way. Tonight you will see three Spirits.

Then the ghost left the room.

Scrooge closed the window and went to bed shaking in fear, and fell asleep. Scrooge saw a strange creature beside his bed.

Are you the Spirit, sir, whose coming was foretold to me?

Призрак прошлого:_I am!'

Who and what are you?

I am the Ghost of Christmas Past.'

Long Past?

No. Your past.

What?

Rise and walk with me

I'm a mortal and liable to fall.

Призрак:_ Touch up my hand, you shell be upheld!

The ghost took Scrooge through time to a small town which Scrooge started to remember. He then remembered the houses, the church, the river, the bridge, and the people.

Good heaven! I was a boy here!

Your lip is trembling and what is upon your cheek? You’ve recollected the way, haven’t you?

I could walk it blindfold.

Призрак:_Let's go on!

Look, the school is not that empty. There`s a little boy, alone, forgotten by his friends. I know him, poor boy.

They can not see us or hear us. They are just shadows from the past.

Девочка:_ dear, dear brother! I have come to bring you home, dear brother! To bring you home, home dear brother!

Home, little Fan?

Yes, Home for ever and ever.

You are quite a woman, little Fan!

_Always a delicate creature!

She died a woman and had as I think children.

A child.

True, your nephew

Now, let`s see another Christmas.

Then they arrived to a house.

This house seems familiar. Oh, this is my house, where I grew up.

Yes, it is. And do you recognize that little boy sitting alone reading?.

It`s me, as a child. But..why am I… why is he alone?.

You must know the answer.

Because my parents were working, that is why I was always alone. That is why my Christmas were so sad and lonely.

Come, take my hand, we don`t have enough time.

No, I have seen enough, go away!. Don`t torture me!.

Don`t blame me, I told you these were shadows of the things that have been.

Take me back!.

We have one more stop, our time is running out.

And they appeared in a garden. Scrooge was now a young man who was sitting in a garden beside a lovely young woman. The woman was crying.

I can’t marry you, Ebenezer. There’s something you love more than me

Nonsense, I love no other woman.

That’s true. You love money. You love it more than anything.

There`s nothing wrong in loving money. We got enganged when we were poor, and when we were happy being poor.

I hope you are happy with the life you have chosen.

And the woman ran away from the garden. Old Scrooge and the ghost followed her. When she stopped, Scrooge could see that she was a few years older. Children laughed and played at her feet. A little girl threw her arms around the woman and gave her a kiss.

Help me tie my bonnet, Mother.

Are they her children?.

Yes, they are, but they could have been yours.

The door opened, and a man entered carrying many gifts.

Father!.

They ran to him and hugged him. The man laughed and gave them the gifts. Then he hugged and kissed his wife.

Stop it!. Take me home!.

Now, let`s see another Christmas.

Скрудж:_it's old Fezziwig! Bless his heart, it's Fezziwig alive again!'

Dick Wilkins, to be sure, Bless me, yes!

No more work to-night. Christmas Eve, Dick! Christmas, Ebenezer!

These are but shadows of the things that have been.

My time is shorter. I told you these were shadows of the things that have been.

Take me back, I cannot bear it!

Take me back, I cannot bear it!(громче)

And Scrooge appeared in his own bedroom.

7. Ebony’s song (Корочкова)

We're walking in the air, we're floating in a moonlit sky

The people far below are sleeping as we fly

I'm holding very tight, I'm riding in a midnight blue

I'm finding I can fly, so high above with you

Far across the world, the villages go by like dreams

The rivers and the hills, the forests and the streams

Children gaze open mouth, taken by surprise

Nobody down below believes their eyes

We're surfing in the air, we're swimming in the frozen sky

We're drifting over ice, see mountains floating by

Thank goodness, it was a dream.

Then the clock struck.

No, Ebenezer. It wasn’t a dream.

I suppose you are the Ghost of Christmas Present.

Yes, I am. I am the Ghost of Christmas Present. I have much to show you. Grab onto my robe. Hurry!. We cannot be late.

Scrooge touched the hem of the spirit’s robe. The bedroom vanished, and Scrooge found himself on a busy, snowy street. There were many people shopping for last minute gifts, the stores were still open, people were cooking their best meals, and the bells from the church were striking, everybody was attending church wearing their best clothes. Everybody was happy

Is it beautiful? do you like it?

Yes, very beautiful!

Hold my robe and look there!

Then the Ghost took Scrooge to Bob Crachit´s house. And standing there at the door, the Ghost proceeded to bless the house. Then Scrooge saw Bob Crachit playing with his children, three boys and two girls.

Кретчет:_ God bless us everyone! (Кретчет говорит тост) Mr. Scrooge! I'll give you Mr. Scrooge, the Founder of the Feast!'

Жена:_ The Founder of the Feast, indeed! I wish I had him here. I'd give him a piece of my mind to feast upon, and I hope he'd have a good appetite for it!

It's Christmas my dear, Long life to him! A merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Жена:_ He'll be very merry and very happy I have no doubt!'(сердито)

Bob Crachit lifted the youngest boy from a chair in the corner and carried him to the table. The boy was pale and thin and carried a crutch.

What’s wrong with him?. Why doesn’t he walk?.

He’s very sick. His name is Tiny Tim, and his parents don’t have money for a doctor, so maybe he will die.

Spirit, tell me if tiny Tim will live.

Призрак:_ I see a vacant sit in a corner and a crutch without an owner. If these shadows remain unaltered by the future, the child will die.

No, no! Oh, no, kind spirit!

Призрак:_ If this shadows remain unaltered by the future, the child will die (Невозмутимо, на тон выше). What then if he will die? He had better do it and decrease the surplus of population.

At that moment Scrooge realized that those were his own words, and felt sorry for himself. Then he heard his name.

Призрак:_ Now, look there (показывает дом племянника)

Ha, ha! Ha, ha, ha, ha! He said that Christmas was a humbug! He's a comical old fellow

I'm sure he is very rich, Fred.

Племянник: _ What of that, my dear? His wealth is no use to him. He doesn't do any good with it. He doesn't make himself comfortable with it. I am sorry for him; I couldn't be angry with him if I tried. Who suffers by his ill whims? - Himself always.

Юноша: _ Indeed, I think he loses a very good dinner!

Юноша: _ He has given us plenty of merriment, I am sure, and it would be ungrateful not to drink to his health.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to the old man, whatever he is!

Well, my time is shorter

One half an hour, there's a new game.

Племянник: _I'm thinking of an animal, a live animal, a savage animal, an animal that growled and grunted sometimes, and talked sometimes and lived in London, and walked about the streets, and was never killed in a market, and was not a horse, or a cow, or a bull, or a tiger, or a dog, or a pig, or a cat, or a bear.

I know what it is, Fred! I know what it is!'

Племянник: _What is it?

Все: _It's your uncle Scro-o-o-o-oge!

Are spirits' lives so short?

My life is very breaf. It ends to-night.

Tonight!

Призрак:_ tonight at midnight.

The room disappeared and they continued their journey. They visited many countries, they traveled to faraway lands. They visited the sick people who felt happy, poor people who felt rich, shelters where people felt hope. It was a long night. And everything happened in just one night. Then, the Ghost of Christmas Present was gone.

Oh, I am in my own bed again.

As he sat up, another ghost floated into the room. He was dressed in black, and a dark hood hid his face.

Who are you?. First came the Ghost of Christmas Past, then the Ghost of Christmas Present. You must be the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. Are you here to show me the future and how it can change?.

The Ghost said nothing, he just gestured toward the door. Scrooge followed him to the street in front of his office. Three men stood out front, talking and shaking their heads.

I know them. I do business with them. We’re friends. These men like me, even if my own nephew does not. But.. what are they saying about me?.

No, I don't know much about it, I only know he's dead.

When did he die?'

Last night, I believe.'

Why, what was the matter with him? I thought he'd never die.

God knows.

What has he done with his money?

I haven't heard.

Left it to his company, perhaps. He hasn't left it to me. That's all I know.

It's likely to be a very cheap funeral, I don't know of anybody to go to it

I don't mind going if a lunch is provided

Spirit, I see, I see. My life goes that way.

Spirit, tell me, are these the shadows that will be, or the shadows that may be?

No, Spirit! Oh no, no! I am not the man I was!

I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future!

I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future!(громче)

Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
Oh it doesn't show signs of stopping
And I bought some corn for popping
The lights are turned way down low
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
When we finally kiss goodnight
How I hate going out in the storm
But if you really hold me tight
All the way home I'll be warm
Oh the fire is slowly dying
And my dear were still good-bying
But as long as you love me so
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

In his anguish he took the Ghost`s hand, but the ghost rejected him, and scrooge woke up in his bed.

Скрудж:_ Oh, thank you!. I’ve been given another chance. I feel like a child, but I don`t care. I want to be a child again!.I am here, I am here! I am as happy as an angel, I am as merry as a schoolboy.

A merry Christmas to everybody! A happy New Year to all the world. Hallo here! Whoop!

Then he heard the church bells striking. Then he saw a boy in the street and shouted.

Hey boy, what day is it today?

It' Christmas day.

It's Christmas day! I haven't missed it!

An intelligent boy, a remarkable boy, do you know where they are selling the praise turkeys?

Yes, I know.

Go and buy it, not the little turkey, a big one!

As big as I am?

Yes, as big as you! I will send it to Bob Cratchit!

Then he pulled out a bag of money. He tossed a handful of coins to the boy

1: But, sir, this is a lot of money.

Keep the change. Hurry up, the Crachits are hungry.

1: Yes, sir!.

Скрудж:: Oh!. Little boy!.

1: Yes, sir?.

Have a merry Christmas!.

1: Thank you, sir. And merry Christmas to you, too.

Scrooge dressed in his finest clothes and headed toward his nephew’s house. He was feeling really happy and excited. He waved everybody in the street and treated everybody nicely.

Here, kid take this money and buy some Christmas candy.

2: Thank you, sir.

And Scrooge headed to Bob Crachit’s house. Mrs. Crachit opened the door, and she couldn´t believe her eyes when she saw Mr. Scrooge standing in front of her.

Oh, Mr. Scrooge! What a surprise!. I want to thank you for the wonderful turkey.

It was a pleasure for me.

Mr. Scoorge, please come in.

Crachit, you’ve worked long hours without complaining for many years. I am raising your salary, and I will also help you support your family.

Oh thank you, Mr. Scrooge. You are so generous.

Скрудж::: Merry Christmas!.

Scrooge did more than what he said he would do. He took care of Tiny Tim, as a second father would do. Some people laughed to see how he changed, but he didn`t care. Scrooge never saw the Ghosts again, but he had many friends and was always close to his family. Each time he had a meal with his friends and family, he would say.

God bless us. God bless us, everyone!.

THE END

Песня

Jingle Bells

Dashing through the snow,
in a one-horse open sleigh,
Over the fields we go,
laughing all the way.
Bells on bob-tails ring,
making spirits bright,
What fun it is to ride
and sing a sleighing song tonight.

Chorus x 4
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
in a one-horse open sleigh.
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
in a one-horse open sleigh.
