The British on holiday
In the nineteenth century, railways were built from the big industrial cities like Leeds and Manchester to seaside towns like Blackpool and Scarborough. For the first time, ordinary working people could visit the seaside. They used to take day-trips on Sundays and special days like Easter. Traditionally, people sat in deckchairs on the beach, swam in the sea, and ate fish and chips. Children could watch ‘Punch and Judy’ puppet shows, build sandcastles and ride donkeys on the beach.
In the 1950s, the first package holidays were launched. Throughout the 60s and 70s, the British increasingly began to abandon the traditional seaside holiday in favour of sunshine and warmer seas in countries like Spain and Greece. Caravan and camping holidays also became popular in the 60s and 70s as car ownership increased.
In the 1990s, budget airlines like easyJet slashed the cost of air tickets to many European destinations. Long-haul flights also came down in price, so holidays to exotic destinations in Australia and Asia became affordable to ordinary families. A growing number of people began to book their own flights and accommodation and, as a result, the package holiday market declined.
The holiday habits of the British are continuing to change. Increasing levels of affluence mean that, for many families, a second foreign holiday – often a winter skiing holiday – is possible.
City breaks are also growing in popularity, and not only to nearby destinations – Las Vegas, Dubai and Cape Town are all favourites for long weekends. And independent travel is becoming more and more popular as the Internet allows holidaymakers to find the best deals online.
a) Manchester has always been popular with the British.
b) Before the 19th century working people couldn’t afford to go away on holiday.
c) English seaside towns almost stopped being visited by tourists.
d) Traditionally, people sat in deckchairs on the beach, swam in the sea, and ate fish and chips.
e) Caravan and camping holidays also became popular in the 50s and 60s
f) Even if a family possessed a car, it didn’t really influence their holidays.

The Bermuda Triangle
On December 5th, 1945 five US Navy planes took off from Fort Lauderdale In Florida. There were 14 pilots on board. Some time after the take off the control tower got a message from one of the planes. “There’s something wrong. The magnetic compass is going crazy. We don’t know where we are.” Soon the five planes disappeared. Boats and planes went immediately to look for the lost planes but they were not successful. There were neither crashed planes nor dead bodies. The accident happened in the area called Bermuda Triangle. It/s a large part of the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda, Southern Florida Puerto Rico. Many ships, planes and about 1,000 people have disappeared in this area. One of the explanations is that underwater earthquakes cause huge waves called tsunami. They also produce very strong winds. Both can destroy ships and planes. Another theory says that there is a strange magnetic force in this area. It can really break a ship into pieces. Scientists also speak about the methane gas on the sea floor of the Bermuda Triangle. When it comes out and mixes with the air, it’s so powerful that it can stop the ship/s or the plane’s engine. It can also start a fire. Than the explosion destroys the ship or the plane completely. Some people believe that aliens carry away people together with the machines. Whatever the truth is there is no clear answer.
1.The control tower got a message from one of the ships that the magnetic compass was going crazy.
2. There weren’t any pieces of planes or dead bodies in the water.
3.Tsunami can cause the destruction of ships and planes.
4. There is the methane gas on the sea floor of the Bermuda Triangle.
5. Aliens carry away people together with the machines to examine them carefully.
6.There is clear answer about The Bermuda Triangle

1. The best viewpoints 2. Plan beforehand
3. Carnival roots 4. The time to attend the Carnival
5. Carnival’s music 6. Styles of dancing
7. A music group for a street 8. The time for pleasure
A. Carnival is the most famous holiday in Brazil and has become a world-famous annual celebration. It is celebrated in towns and villages throughout Brazil for almost a week 40 days before Easter, which is usually in February, the hottest month in the Southern Hemisphere. Officially, it starts on Saturday and finishes on Fat Tuesday with the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday, during which some Christians give up something that they enjoy.
B. The most colourful events take place in the Carnival World Capital, Rio de Janeiro. It was the original place where, in 1723, Portuguese immigrants went out onto the streets soaking each other with buckets of water and throwing mud and food, often ending up in street brawls and riots. The concept kept changing throughout the 1800s with more organized parades, where the Emperor with a group of aristocrats joined in masks with luxurious costumes and music.
C. Now the parade varies from state to state. It is a mixture of arts. The music played during Rio Carnival is samba – a unique Brazilian music originating from Rio. It’s also a dance form that was invented by the poor Afro-Brazilians as a type of ritual music. The word “samba” meant to pray to the spirits of the ancestors and the gods of the African Pantheon. As a noun, it could mean a complaint or a cry.
D. Even today, the most involved groups in Rio Carnival are the poorest, the so-called “favelas”, where houses are made of cardboard or other metal remains, and there is often no water, electricity or sewage system. However, the favelas’ residents always join in the festivities and actually make the Carnival, which really means a lot to them. Because, for once during the year, they get to go out and have as much fun as they can.
E. Residents of the favelas are often members of local samba schools and are deeply involved with the performance and costumes of their groups. Each neighborhood in Rio has its favorite Carnival streetband. There are more than 300 of them in Rio nowadays, and each year this number increases. Each band has its place or street for its parade and the big ones usually close the streets to the traffic.
F. Rio de Janeiro is usually divided into three zones. The so-called Zona Sul is by far the most pleasant place to stay in Rio, as it is by the sea and is the most civilized part of the city. Districts Copacabana and Ipanema together form a big stage offering a carnival happening at every corner. Leblon, being a bit more upscale, is also an excellent location.
G. Except the industries, malls and the carnival-related workers, the country stops completely for almost a week and festivities are intense, day and night. If you plan to go to watch the Carnival, you should organize your trip well in advance. The best hotels, especially in the Zona Sul, are booked up early, so it’s a good idea to make a reservation at least 3 or 4 months in advance.

Dostoyevsky Memorial Apartment in Moscow F. Dostoyevsky’s Memorial Apartment is the only museum in Moscow and the first in the world. Fyodor Mikhailovich spent the first fifteen years of his life here. It is the place where his character took shape. The museum occupies a wing of Mariinskaya hospital. There is a memorial plaque on the building. The building inside has never been rebuilt: the walls, the stoves, and the floor structure have remained the way they used to be at the time when the writer lived there. The gate with lions on the arches in front of the entrance to the apartment has been preserved since Dostoyevsky’s time. The museum holds authentic memorial furniture pieces of the Dostoyevsky's family, portraits of his parents, immediate ancestors and relatives as well as books. In fact, the Dostoyevsky enjoyed reading. The writer’s father and mother were educated people. The readings uniting the whole family usually took place in the living room.
