Lesson Plan: Stage Makeup for Dancers (Expressing Character Through Light & Shadow)
Institution: Choreographic College
Course: Stagecraft for Dancers
Duration: 90 minutes
Level: Intermediate (1st–2nd year)
3 Lesson Objectives (Aims)
Technical: Students will correctly apply a basic eyebrow blocking and reshaping technique to ensure facial expressions remain visible under stage lighting.
Artistic: Students will modify their natural features (using contour and highlight) to create a specific emotional character (e.g., lyrical sadness, sharp anger, or folk joy).
Practical: Students will identify and correct three common stage makeup mistakes (e.g., unblended edges, lost eyebrows, shiny skin) that distort or erase facial features from the audience’s view.
Equipment (Per student & shared)
Per student station:
Hand mirror (magnifying optional)
Makeup wipes & micellar water + cotton pads
Foundation stick (2 shades darker than skin tone) + lighter concealer
Translucent setting powder + large powder puff
Eyeshadow palette (matte neutrals + one accent color)
Black & brown soft kohl pencils
Lip palette (nude, red, burgundy)
Small angled brush + blending sponge
Setting spray
Shared / Instructor’s table:
Latex/nose wax (for advanced character work – demonstration only)
Fake lashes & lash glue
Alcohol-activated face paints (for heavy sweat-proof makeup)
Headbands (to keep hair off face)
iPad with stage lighting photos (warm, cool, front, top)
Lesson Stages
1. Beginning (15 min) – “Seeing as the Audience Sees”
Check-in (3 min): Students sit in a semicircle. Instructor asks: “Have you ever felt your face ‘disappear’ on stage?”
Context (7 min): Show two photos of the same dancer – no makeup vs. stage makeup – under stage lighting (cool top light, warm front light). Discuss why ballet/folk/contemporary dancers need exaggerated features.
Goal setting (3 min): State today’s 3 objectives. Instructor demonstrates “The 10-Foot Rule”: if you can’t see your expression in a mirror at arm’s length, the back row won’t see it.
Safety & hygiene (2 min): Brief reminder – no sharing of sponges/mascara wands; sanitize all shared products.
2. Main Part (60 min) – Hands-On Application
Phase A: Skin & Foundation Base (15 min)
Students apply oil-free moisturizer, then two-tone foundation: lighter in center of face, darker under cheekbones/jawline.
Instructor circulates, correcting “mask effect” (foundation too uniform).
Set with powder – focus on T-zone (sweat-prone areas for dancers).
Phase B: Eyes & Eyebrows for Distance (20 min)
Technique 1 – Brow blocking (optional for stronger characters): Instructor demonstrates glue stick + powder over brows to redraw them higher/more arched.
Technique 2 – Expressive eyes: Create a “lifted outer corner” using brown shadow as an upturned wing (avoid sharp liner – it cracks with sweat).
Students practice tightlining upper waterline to restore lash line after foundation.
Phase C: Character Feature (15 min)
Each student picks one brief phrase (from their current dance piece) and adapts makeup:
Lyrical: Soft pink lips, subtle highlighter, downturned eye shape.
Character/folk: Red lips, sharp cheek contour, patterned dot under eye (folk style).
Modern/angst: Hollow cheeks (gray-brown contour), bare pale lips, dark under-eye shadow.
Phase D: Setting & Sweat Test (10 min)
Mist setting spray, then press powder again over smile lines/eyelids.
Fun test: Students jog in place for 30 seconds, then check smudging in mirror. Fix with sponge + powder.
3. Conclusion & Wrap-Up (15 min)
Peer Feedback (8 min):
Students stand 10 feet from a partner. Partner says: “I see your expression clearly / I can’t read your eyebrows / Your lip color helps me feel the mood.”
Each student makes one small fix based on peer’s comment.
Instructor Review (5 min):
Recap 3 mistakes observed:
Forgetting to set under-eye (creases in performance).
Blending contour too soft (lost under side light).
Natural brows not darkened (eyes look small from distance).
Exit Ticket (2 min):
Students name one thing they will do differently for their next stage performance and clean their station completely.
Final note: Remind students – stage makeup is a rehearsed skill. Practice it before dress rehearsal, just like a pirouette.
