Theme: How much juice? How many apples?

The aim: Grammar: Some/any were first introduced in Book Five, but mostly with countable nouns. In this unit there are a lot of uncountable nouns. The use of some in requests is introduced.

How much/How many: There are exercises on How much ...? and How many ...?

Vocabulary: There is quite a heavy vocabulary to do with food, drink and shopping. Some expressions of quantity are introduced.

Pronunciation: The rule of reading of the vowels О and U is revised.

Everyday English: The forms of request and offer are introduced in different situations.

Warm-up

Students ask and answer the questions using the picture in exercise 7, page 47.

You can introduce some expressions of quantity using pictures and examples in exercise 2. You can prepare some more pictures beforehand. Draw students’ attention to the different use of expressions of quantity.

Students listen and read exercise 3.

Speaking

Students read the dialogue in pairs, ask them to find seven countable nouns and three uncountable nouns.

Answers:

Count nouns: pears, plums, vegetables, potatoes, carrots, sister, crisps;

Uncount nouns: butter, cheese, juice.

Students work in pairs to complete the table. They use the conversation. This exercise is not easy. Be prepared to give lots of help. Focus students attention on the table and ask them to find examples in the conversation.

The table summarizes all the rules about expressions of quantity.

The aim of this activity is for students to discover for themselves from context the sometimes confusing rules of expressions of quantity involved with count and uncount nouns.

You should explain that we can’t use much with countable nouns and many with uncountable nouns in positive sentences. But we can use them only in negatives and questions.

Students ask and answer questions about what there is in the picture using the expressions of quantity from the table.

• Exercise 7. Students look at Asel’s shopping list, in pairs ask and answer questions about it.

Ask students to prepare their own shopping lists and ask questions to find out what’s on his/her partner’s list.


Writing

Ask students to write a few sentences about how much food and drink there is in their fridge and read it to their partners.


Much and many

  1. Much употребляется только с неисчисляемым существи­тельным в вопросительных и отрицательных предложениях.

How much cheese is there in the fridge?

I haven't got much money.

  1. Many употребляется только с исчисляемым существи­тельным в вопросительных и отрицательных предложениях. How many children have they got?

There aren't many people in the room.

A few and a little

  1. A Jew употребляется только с исчисляемым- сущест­вительным во множественном числе.

There are a few apples on the table.

  1. A little употребляется только с неисчисляемым сущест­вительным в единственном числе.

There's a little milk in the bottle.

A lot of /lots of

  1. A lot of /lots of употребляется с исчисляемым и неисчи­сляемым существительным.

There is a lot of batter... There are a lot of apples.

A lot of /lots of употребляется в вопросительных и в отрицательных предложениях.

Are there a lot of books?

I haven't got a lot of friends.

There are lots of trees in our garden.
